Many young people have a bleak picture of what the aging experience
might be like. They think that elderly members of the population are frail,
lonely, or have checked out of society. These opinions paint an austere picture
of aging, and while some of them are true, not everything is quite as sad. Here
are 5 interesting facts about aging that might surprise you and change the way
you think about your grandparents.
1. Many senior citizens are still in the workforce. Did you know that
in the US, over 5 million senior citizens are still working? They are actively
sharing their expertise and skills to help make their industry—and the world—a better
place.
2. Senior citizens are likelier to vote. Here are the numbers: 61% of
people 65 years old and older voted in 2010, and 54% of those aged 55 to 64
also cast their ballots. Meanwhile, only 37% of people in the 25 to 44 age
range voted, and only 21% of those in the 18 to 25 segment cast their ballots.
Seniors make up the majority of registered voters!
3. It’s possible to stay tech savvy as you age. IN fact, a good 40% of
senior citizens are active online and have computer access. Around 15 million
Facebook users are 65 years old and up. Aside from social media sites, the
elderly also read news sites, play online games, shop online, actively
contribute to forums that relate to their interest, and yes—they also sign up
for dating sites.
4. Sadly, an estimated 5.1 million Americans have Alzheimer's disease.
Although cognitive decline is not a ‘normal’ part of aging, the risks of developing
this condition rises with advanced age. Research indicates that the prevalence
of Alzheimer's and other dementias doubles every five years after the age 65.
According to estimates, anywhere from 1 to 4 family members become primary
caregivers for each elderly person that battles Alzheimer's disease.
5. Assisted living dementia care is available. The best assisted living
facilities provide dedicated memory care programs that designed to decrease agitation
and to wander while improving the quality of life of their clients.
